Family and Local History

The Society of Genealogists The SoG has a huge library and an on-line bookshop. A growing proportion of its collection may be accessed on-line.
Genuki The premier site for UK and Ireland family history research.
Cyndi’s List Thousands upon thousands of links to genealogy and family history sites.
Hornsey Historical Society Covers the boroughs of Hornsey and Haringey, including Tottenham. Many interesting publications.
London and North Middlesex FHS Self-explanatory.
The Samuel South Page The Tottenham area was rich in brick earth, and the manufacture of bricks and flower-pots was an important local industry in for many years. South’s of White Hart Lane one of the last and largest companies involved in the latter. Ken Barker’s site covers its history, and includes many unique photos. Lots of useful links, too.
Downhills School Jim Franklin and others have put together a lovely site devoted to the old Downhills School.
Tower Hamlets History On-Line If your family came to Tottenham in the 1870s, there’s a fair chance it was from Tower Hamlets. This site has a mass of fascinating articles about the area.
Steeljam Genealogy A fantastic site for London history, both family and local.
John Palmer’s Wirksworth Pages Absolutely nothing to do with London, Middlesex, or Tottenham, but without question the most comprehensive site devoted to a single parish on the entire web. My inspiration!
The Worldwide Cemetery Page Dozens of links to cemeteries across the world, including war graves.
Bruce Castle Museum New website, under construction. Bruce Castle’s permanent exhibitions include locasl history, costume, and postal history (during the 19thc Rowland Hill and his brother ran the school at Bruce Castle).
The Edmonton Hundred Historical Society Lecture programmes, local history publications.
Greenwood’s 1827 Map of London Sadly, most of the free antique maps on the net aren’t worth the bother of downloading, especially if your idea is to enlarge them. This is the splendid exception—pages print out nice and clearly on A4, and require little or no adjustment in Photoshop, etc. One moan—it doesn’t go out as far as Tottenham!
Commonwealth War Graves Commission On-line index of servicemen and servicewomen killed in WWI and WWII—includes civilians killed in WWII.
Roy Stockdill’s Introduction to Genealogy and Family History An outstanding on-line guide for the newcomer to genealogy and family history—good for the not-so-newcomer also.
