Volume
XII covers most of the Regency period (18131820) and the reigns of George
IV (18201830) and William IV (18301837). The final entry is for 27
June, exactly a week after Williams death. National civil registration commenced
on 1 July.
During this period there were 722 entries of marriage, which I have arranged in
seven pages.
Although Tottenham was growing slowly more populous, marriages during this period
still averaged only thirty a year, reflecting the fact that even in 1837 it was
still little more than a village. It retained its popularity as a marriage venue
for the well-to-doas in previous years, a high proportion of the entries
are for middle-class Londoners, and again, some of the parties came from surprisingly
far afield.
