Marriages Volume XII

Volume XII covers most of the Regency period (1813–1820) and the reigns of George IV (1820–1830) and William IV (1830–1837). The final entry is for 27 June, exactly a week after William’s death. National civil registration commenced on 1 July.

During this period there were 722 entries of marriage, which I have arranged in seven pages.

Although Tottenham was growing slowly more populous, marriages during this period still averaged only thirty a year, reflecting the fact that even in 1837 it was still little more than a village. It retained its popularity as a marriage venue for the well-to-do—as in previous years, a high proportion of the entries are for middle-class Londoners, and again, some of the parties came from surprisingly far afield.
